These are some applications that you might find useful when playing older versions of Minecraft.

MCMap

No, this is not the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. Rather, this is a tool to generate isometric maps of your Minecraft world. It works with old versions of Minecraft up to more modern versions. There existed another tool, DK's Biome Extractor, that allowed you to get biome colors in MCMap, but I have been unable to find a working version (at least for b1.7). While there are many other mapping tools out there, MCMap is still my favorite.

MultiMC

This is a launcher that allows you have many different isolated instances of Minecraft. This program is very useful for trying out different versions of Minecraft, along with testing mods, which can be enabled or disabled before launching the instance. You will have almost no reason to use the official launcher after trying this.

It's available on Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Protip: Depending on your distro or current setup, you may need to install additional packages apart from the ones listed on the website. If MultiMC runs but Minecraft itself crashes when launching an instance, you may need to install Java 8 even if you already have another version of Java installed. Many guides and references exist on how to obtain it on your system depending on your distribution. For example, a guide to obtaining Java OpenJDK 8 on Debian 10 can be found here.
